Everything is in our shelf. You take something out and ask about all the stories connected to it. We go on for days. You put it back and reach for something else. It has nothing in common with the last one, but belongs here too. It’s your turn to tell a story now. I forget about everything else. You put it back and I take out the next thing.

The group show Billy takes as a starting point the eponymous shelving system by Ikea. As one of the most broadly available and affordable bookshelves, it can be found almost everywhere: from a friend’s living room to the background of a random vlogger. Housing not only books but a wide arrange of different tokens, it acts as a platform to present an intimate snapshot of the owner’s personal world and what feels important to them. Billy became a symbol for this certain type of curated intimacy. The exhibition shows works by S()fia Braga, Philippe Gerlach, Klajdi Gjymenga, Tina Graßegger, Rainer Grilberger, Ines Hanf, Alexandra Kahl, Maximiliane Kumpf, Elias Takacs, Matthias Tremmel, Lisa-Marie Wagner and Sabrina Wildbacher. They were arranged by Matthias Tremmel in a display system built by the artist. The poster was designed by Ines Hanf. The show was curated by Wanja Hack. Parallel to the exhibition an article was published in ‘Die Referentin’ – a local cultural journal. Printed on the inner four pages the article then was detached from the rest of the journal and placed in the exhibition. In this way the article also functioned as the show’s press release.
